Fawcett, H. W. And Hooper, G. W. W. (Editors) - The Fighting At Jutland. The Personal Experiences Of Sixty Officers And Men Of The British Fleet - ( Item 113314 )

Published in UK by MacLure, MacDonald & Co. 1921. First Edition First Impression. Poor Hardback. Front hinge cracked. Some foxing to pages. 472 pages including index. However, the book has some redeeming features. There is a b/w photograph pasted on to the free front endpaper. Two people are pictured, one of whom is Admiral of the Fleet David Beatty. He commanded the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, a tactically indecisive engagement after which his aggressive approach was contrasted with the caution of his commander Admiral Sir John Jellicoe. He is remembered for his comment at Jutland that "There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today", after two of his ships exploded. Later in the war he succeeded Jellicoe as Commander in Chief of the Grand Fleet, in which capacity he received the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet at the end of the war. He then served a lengthy term as First Sea Lord in which capacity he was involved in negotiating the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. On the rear of the front free endpaper is pasted a letter. It reads "Iron Duke at Haifa 26th May 21 A small token of my esteem and regard for your charming hospitality in Jerusalem 20-24th May 1921". The signature is not clear; at first I thought it may be Churchill, but it looks more like Churcher. Although Churchill did visit Jerusalem at about this time, Hansard records him being in the house of commons on May 24th 1921. The name Eve is written in pen in the top left hand corner of the page (not on the letter). The letter is blind stamped with the 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' design.
