Winston Churchill ended his four-volume History of the English-Speaking Peoples in January 1901, just before what many would see as the most important and exciting, part of their story. Acclaimed historian Andrew Roberts has written a sequel, beginning where Churchill finished his Nobel Prize-winning work and taking the reader through the vicissitudes of the 20th-century, right up to the present day. Andrew Roberts has written a compelling history. Beginning where Churchill left off, he covers the world-historical struggles which have engulfed the English-speaking peoples since 1900: the First World War, the rise of Fascism followed by the long Cold War against Soviet Communism and, in our own times, the new global threat of Islamicist Terrorism. Yet, just as Churchill did, he also looks at the cultural, social and political history of the English-speaking nations, examining the significance of matters from sport to Hollywood. Roberts writes with great insight, always clear and decisive in his narrative and robustly reassessing common assumptions. He argues, for example, that the Boer War was motivated more by British disapproval of a despotic regime than by lust for the gold fields of South Africa. One of his many challenging conclusions is to ask how the propaganda of the losing side came to be accepted as fact. In researching this work, Andrew Roberts has studied the private papers of over two hundred individuals in thirty archives on three continents. The result is a magisterial work, broad in scope and intensely readable. It is filled with fascinating facts such as that no two nations who play cricket with one another have gone to war (India and Pakistan suspended play five years before doing so) or that New Zealand sheep were boiled to make candles before refrigeration enabled the meat to be sold around the world. With its sweeping narrative and thought-provoking conclusions, this volume is truly a fitting successor to Churchill's great achievement.
