Searle, Ronald - Slightly Foxed – but still desirable (Published in by The Folio Society in 2015. Introduced and illustrated by the author. Bound in paper, printed and blocked with a design by Ronald Searle. Set in Albertina. 128 pages. Frontispiece and 60 integrated colour illustrations. 9" x 6.25". The catalogues of second-hand book dealers contain a language all of their own, with esoteric phrases that summon curious visions to all but the most experienced of book hunters. After many years of intrepid exploration into this secretive world, Ronald Searle set about creating a compendium of these words and phrases with the intention of clearing up some of the confusion, or adding to it. If you have ever pondered the meaning of phrases such as 'blind-tooled', 'contemporary sheep', some worming of the epoch' and, indeed, 'slightly foxed', then Searle reveals all with his sprightly, witty, and frequently cheeky cartoons. And if that wasn't enough, he has kindly provided a glossary, where we learn for example that a book described as 'Mellow' will show: 'Distinct signs of wear, but will hold until customer is out of shop'. Ronald Searle remains one of Britain's best-loved illustrators; his chaotic St Trinian's and mischievous Molesworth are as delightful as they have ever been. Gerald Scarfe, for whom Searle was a particular hero, says that 'his pen was always searching, exploring every nook and cranny of his subject', and indeed each illustration in Slightly Foxed is a joyful splatter of inky exuberance. )
