Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von - Faust : Parts One and Two - ( Item 140307 )

Published in London by Folio Society. 2005. First Thus. Fine Quarter-Leather Hardback. No inscriptions or bookplates. Near Fine slipcase. Slight marks to panels of slipcase. Bold in theme, rich in incident and cosmic in its vision, Faust is Goethe's masterpiece and one of the most significant works of Western literature. In it, he transformed the medieval legend of the daring magus who sells his soul to the Devil, creating Faust anew as a modern 'superman' who believes himself to be beyond good and evil. Faust mirrors the age of revolution through which Goethe lived, intertwining his own intellectual and spiritual journey with that of his rebellious hero to produce a magnificent evocation of the terrors and exhilaration of human creativity. Goethe himself remarked that Eugene Delacroix was 'just the man to dive into Faust and extract from it probable pictures … full of intellect and expression'. Whether it is the vigorous winged figure of Mephistopheles, Faust's first encounter with his devilish accomplice, wild rides through the night, or Faust's poignant parting from Gretchen, Delacroix's compelling lithographs brilliantly convey the sensuous and diabolic sentiment of Goethe's narrative. Their publication in Faust, Part I in 1828 inaugurated the Romantic style in book illustration, single-handedly creating the tradition of the artist-illustrator who actively participates in the making of a book. In this stunning edition, Part II is illustrated with classically inspired paintings from Goethe's lifetime and together they create a unique edition of one of the great dramatic works of European literature. Illustrated by Eugene Delacroix.
